We attend compassionately to the many facets of a woman's experience and utilize the spectrum of tools and modalities available to her.
We seek out the root causes of illness rather than simply treating visible symptoms. Medicine and health are rapidly evolving fields and women’s health in particular is finally getting the attention, research and resources it deserves. No two women are alike and we honor this individuality with personalized care.
Every woman deserves to have a provider with whom she feels safe and respected, and who she feels genuinely cares about her well-being; someone she can trust to practice evidence-based medicine (supported by rigorous scientific study) and who will provide her with options so she can make informed decisions about what’s best for her and her unique life.
Sage Women’s Health is located in Solvang and our suite has been designed to feel cozy and inviting with great attention paid to making your visit a pleasant and safe experience. Going for your annual exam and attending to your health mustn’t feel like a dreaded task. We use calming aromatherapy and music, cozy cloth gowns, and an inviting ambience to help you relax into the important work of caring for yourself.
I'm so glad you're here.
Midwife means “with woman” and right there in my title you find the collaborative spirit that inspires my practice style.
Many years ago, while studying public health at UC Berkeley, I joined a profoundly impactful student-run class and club called Students for Integrative Medicine which planted the first seeds of my passion for the harmonious marriage of conventional and holistic approaches to health. From there I moved to New York where I earned my second bachelor's degree in Nursing and a master's in Nurse Midwifery from Columbia University School of Nursing. Returning home to sunny California I became board-certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board and began “catching babies” (midwife-speak for delivering which gives the credit and power back to the mother doing the hard work). My subsequent training in herbalism and functional/integrative medicine for women’s health has been with Dr. Aviva Romm. My seventeen years of clinical experience have spanned community health settings, hospital and out-of-hospital birth centers, and most recently over three years in private practice in Santa Barbara.
Nurse midwives can practice independently in California, but I am grateful to maintain a collaborative relationship with the beloved Santa Barbara OB-GYN Dr. Susanne Ramos with whom I consult, collaborate and refer anytime a patient’s care progresses outside of my scope.
I’m a Santa Ynez Valley native, wife and mother of two. I’m delighted to finally be serving the community where I was raised. My heart’s mission is to empower women with knowledge and to deepen their trust in their own intuition about their well-being.
We are in network with Medicare and CenCal and those visits will be billed to the carriers directly. We are not in network with Blue Shield but they will often pay towards your visit and you will only be responsible for the remainder of your visit fee. For all other patients the fees below will be due at the time of your appointment and upon request we can provide you with a superbill to submit to your insurance. Any labs, imaging, or prescriptions ordered for you will be billed to your insurance by those facilities even if we're not contracted with your insurance.
For most visits an intake form will be emailed to you at the time of your booking. To best utilize your time in the office please return the completed intake at least 48 hours before your visit so that Brita will have a chance to review it before you meet.
Whenever possible please bring relevant medical records to your appointment, especially lab work and imaging reports. Unfortunately - with the exception of lab work from Pcific Diagnostic Lab or Quest Lab - Brita does not have access to your previous records (even if she's seen you in another office), but we can formally request them as needed.
See below for common clinical visits as well as associated fees. Initial visits to the practice are booked for one hour. Please note there is an $80 cancellation fee for no-shows and appointments cancelled within 24-hours of the appointment time. For more information about our fees, please click here.

Many thoughtful accounts have been written about the emotional, social and spiritual significance of aging, but today let’s focus on the physical. In particular, I’d like to talk about healthspan and the influence of one very important but lesser known hormone called DHEA.
Nature is full of rhythms and we are a part of nature. Some are extravagantly displayed like the waxing and waning of the moon, while others are hidden like the rhythmic growth of trees that’s evident in their concentric rings. Our bodies, too, follow multitudes of rhythms that we depend on for our wellbeing. Our heartbeat, our sleep/wake pattern, and our menstrual cycle are a few examples.
If you've been in to see me then you've probably heard me geek out about your microbiome. I can’t seem to stop talking about it! From vaginal and urinary tract infections to autoimmune conditions, hormone imbalances and mood/sleep disorders, the balance of your gut microbes directly influences how you feel in your body today.
